Meet the Artists
JOE & WAYNE SEGAL are our exclusive musical production team bringing you the best jazz afloat ! Joe has been contracting the very best artists in jazz for the legendary Jazz Showcase, Chicago since 1947. He and Wayne also host the jumping Be Bop Cafe of Navy Pier, Chicago and since 2000 they have been helping us stage our Annual Jazz Parties At Sea. .
JOEY DEFRANCESCO TRIO Joey has been an important force in the revival of the Hammond B-3 organ. His music has run the gamut from soul jazz to blues grooves associated with Jimmy Smith and advanced modal style of John Coltrane. By the age of 10 he was performing playing gigs and sitting in with artists like Jack McDuff and Groove Holmes. He has played on the soundtracks of many great movies and has even picked up the trumpet as a second instrument. He will be joined by Jake Langley on Guitar and Byron “Wookie” Lanham on drums. Welcome back Joey!
HARRY ALLEN QUARTET FEATURING JOE COHN "Stan Getz was once asked his idea of the perfect tenor saxophone soloist. His answer was, 'My technique, Al Cohn's ideas, and Zoot's time.' The fulfillment of that ideal may well be embodied in thirty-year-old Harry Allen." This brilliant award winning tenor saxophonist is constantly in demand. He receives nothing but rave reviews from critics and musicians alike. Joe Cohn was fated to a life in music by his antecedents and early exposure to the greatest musicians and composers, Joe, son of legendary saxophonist Al Cohn and vocalist Marylin Moore, has steadily risen to the fore and made his mark as one of the most inventive and catalytic guitarists in jazz. We are proud to welcome Harry and Joe to this year’s party.
BUSTER WILLIAMS QUARTET WITH PATRICE RUSHEN, LENNY WHITE AND STEFON HARRIS what a treat we have in store for you with this fantastic quartet. Buster, one of the best bass men in the world has worked with Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughn and Sonny Stitt to name but a few. Stefon Harris “speaks” with his vibes in sometimes blistering, sometimes cool and always sublime tones. Patrice Rushen, keyboard/singer/songwriter/arranger/musical director - her talents go on and on, is returning to her jazz roots for our 8th Annual Jazz Party At Sea. They are joined by fantastic drummer Lenny White, best known for being part of Chick Corea’s “Return to Forever” in the 70’s. Lenny started his career on top, playing regularly with Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson and Stan Getz. This quartet features la creme de la creme!
JUNIOR MANCE trio with Jackie Williams only one of the world’s greatest pianists but one of the nicest people you will meet around the ship. Junior has toured with Cannonball Adderley, Dizzy Gillespie, Dinah Washington, Joe Williams...the list goes on and on. Junior has bee inducted into “The Jazz Hall of Fame”, an honor he is extremely proud of and we are more than proud to have him at our party.
FREDDY COLE Virtuoso pianist and masterful jazz vocalist, Freddy Cole captivates listeners with his elegant presence, subtle phrasing and intimate singing style. Although Freddy has been charming audiences around the world for over 40 years, he used to be overshadowed by the larger than life persona and legendary career of his late brother Nat King Cole. However, Freddy has found his own niche in the jazz world. We consider ourselves most fortunate to hear this jazz “great” who has the panache of Duke Ellington and a voice like “raw silk”. Welcome back Freddy!
Sherrie Maricle and the DIVA JAZZ ORCHESTRA This 15 piece ensemble of extremely talented verstile musicians who happen to be female were founded in 1992 by Stanley Kay, a former drummer with the Buddy Rich Big Band. He had already discovered Sherrie Maricle in 1990. Sherrie now heads this dynamic orchestra with a musical force that holds forth to the present day. They have played at the most prestigious venues around the world with some of the finest artists. Some past members of DIVA have become legends in their own right and now this incredible orchestra will be playing for us. Welcome ladies!
